Hall rallies to capture overall
Section V Boys Golf title
In 3rd place was Danny Drummond (C.G. Finney, ‘13) with a round of 75 for a total of 152. This will be Drummond’s second straight appearance. Alex Bourdelais (McQuaid Jesuit, ’12) finished in 4th place after his second round of 78, good for a 153 total. Joining Bourdelais as a first-time state participant is Troy Allen (Brockport, ’11), after his 154 total was good for 5th place after his second round of 78.
In a three-way tie for 6th place were Bryce Edmister (Webster Schroeder, ’10), who will be competing at his fourth state championship, Ben Kircher (McQuaid Jesuit, ’10), and Kevin Connell (Rush-Henrietta, ’11), who all finished with a two-day total of 155. In 9th place and claiming the final spot on this year’s state team was Andrew Lane (McQuaid Jesuit, ’10), who will be making his 3rd state appearance after finishing at 156. Chris Blyth (Pittsford Mendon, ’11) won a four-way playoff at 158 to gain the 1st alternate position.
This year’s team has the opportunity to become the second team in the history of the state tournament to win three consecutive sectional championships. The team will depart for a practice round on Saturday, June 5 with competition rounds to follow on Sunday, June 6 and Monday, June 7. The Sunday round will begin at 9:00 AM and the Monday round will begin at 7:30 AM at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University.

Thursday, May 20
Caruso, Glavin claim last two Classification spots, McQuaid
and East take team berths in RCAC
Mike Caruso and Brendan Glavin of McQuaid shot 76 and 79, respectively, to claim
the last two spots in the Classification Event in the RCAC Qualifier at Shadow
Lake Golf and Racquet Club. That will give their team six team members
playing in the event as their team has also qualified.
East High also has qualified for the Classification Event after winning the City Cup earlier this season. Both teams will compete in Class A.
Long wins Monroe County T of C, eight others advance to
Classification Event
Kevin Long (Webster Thomas) captured medalist honors at the Monroe County
Tournament of Champions with an even-par round of 72 at The Brookwoods Golf
Club. He finished one shot ahead of Chris Blyth (Pittsford Mendon) and
Bryce Edmister (Webster Schroeder), both of whom had already qualified for the
Classification Event as members of their qualified teams.
Gavin Hall (Pittsford Mendon) shook of a rough start to finish alone in 4th after his round of 74. Doug Uhazie (Penfield) took 5th place and the 2nd individual spot following his round of 75. Corey Kocent (Batavia) and Teddy Corcoran (Brighton) took the 3rd and 4th individual spots after finishing in a four-way tie for 6th with team qualifiers Tom Kolb (Victor) and Shane Dobesh (Webster Schroeder). Kevin Connell (Rush-Henrietta) also survived a rough front nine before posting his score of 77 to take the 4th qualifying spot and a 10th place finish.
Jim Allen (Spencerport) and Yarik Merkulov (Penfield) claimed the next two spots with rounds of 78, tied with Troy Allen (Brockport), who had already qualified with his team, for 11th place. Merkulov, playing with Hall and Connell, also survived a difficult front side to advance and remain alive for a possible fifth trip to the state tournament.
There was a playoff at 79, with four players playing for two spots in the
Classification Event. Tyler Hill (Brockport) was in the group tied for
14th place, but was already qualified so Doug Kulikowski (Pittsford Sutherland),
Corey Layton (Fairport), Kyle Zaffuto (Brockport), and Nick Bucci
(Rush-Henrietta) went to play extra holes. Bucci bogeyed the first hole
and was eliminated as the other three players made par. All three players
made par on the second hole and on the par-3 3rd hole, Zaffuto was eliminated as
Kulikowski and Layton each made par to qualify for Saturday.
Monday, May 17
Helgeland captures medalist honors at Steuben qualifier,
Arkport and Hammondsport take Class C berths
Nick Helgeland (Jasper-Troupsburg) finished with a round of 86 at the Steuben
County qualifier at Indian Hills Golf Course to capture medalist honors by seven
shots. Teammate Abe Weeks and Will Faes (Canisteo-Greenwood) also
qualified as individuals for the Classification Event.
Arkport and Hammondsport will represent Steuben County in Class C. Arkport is led by Adam Lang, who finished third in the qualifier and Hammondsport is led by Brandon Allen, who finished fifth.
Fitzpatrick wins Livingston crown, Hornell, LeRoy, and
Geneseo claim team berths
Alex Fitzpatrick (Hornell) won medalist honors at the Livingston County
qualifier at Old Hickory Golf Club with an even-par round of 72.
Fitzpatrick's teammates will also join him at sectionals at they captured the
county's Red Division title. LeRoy won the Yellow Division and Geneseo
claimed the Blue Division title to move on as well.
2009 state representative Tommy Linehan (Dansville) led the group of individuals qualifying from Livingston County, finishing in a three-way tie for second with a round of 76. Joining him in second place was Ryan Forrester (Keshequa) and Dan Bayer (Livonia). Bayer's teammate Cody Cronmiller finished alone in 5th place after his round of 79. Rounding out the individual qualifiers were Cam McLaughlin (Letchworth) and Dan Kurtz (Livonia), who finished with rounds of 82 and 84, respectively.
Gananda and Williamson claim Wayne County berths, Mills and
Howell share medalist honors
Thomas Mills (Gananda) and Scott Howell (North Rose-Wolcott) fired rounds of 82
at Wayne Hills Country Club to earn medalist honors at the Wayne County
qualifier. Mills and his Gananda teammates finished the season with a 15-1
record and will compete in Class C at sectionals. Williamson will be the
Class B representative from Wayne County after posting a 13-3 record.
Howell led the group of individual qualifiers into the sectional tournament. Greg Thomas of Marion and Lyons teammates Devan Veeder and Brandon DeSain also qualified.
Winkleman leads Attica to Class B berth from Genesee
Region, Notre Dame-Batavia also advances
Chad Winkleman won medalist honors with a round of five-over-par 77 at Stafford
Country Clubto lead Attica to a Class B berth at sectionals. Attica
finished with a team total of 364. Notre Dame-Batavia clinched the Class C
with a team total of 352. Teammates Tom Dehr and John Lapple each finished
with rounds of 85.
Qualifying as individuals from the Genesee Region were a pair of Elba teammates, Sam Lamont and Jon Clark, who had rounds of 81 and 85, respectively. Evan Smith of Wheatland-Chili finished in third place in the qualifier with a round of 82, and Tyler Tamblin finished in fourth place after posting an 84.
Webster Schroeder wins Monroe County Team Championship,
three others advance
Seniors Bryce Edmister and Shane Dobesh led Webster Schroeder to the
Monroe County team title yesterday, posting rounds of one-under-par 71 at
Ravenwood Golf Club to help their team finish with a best five-out-of-six score
of 380, one stroke ahead of second place Pittsford Mendon. Gavin Hall led
the Vikings to a total score of 381 after finishing with a six-under-par round
of 66 to earn medalist honors for the day. Teammate Chris Blythe finished
tied for third in individual standings with his round of 71.
Brockport finished in third place with a score of 392. Tyler Hill led the team with his round of 75. Claiming the last spot from Monroe County was Victor with a team score of 398, finishing one stroke ahead of 5th place Rush-Henrietta. Tom Kolb led the Blue Devils with his round of three-under par 69, good for a second place finish in the individual standings. All teams that qualified from Monroe County will compete in Class A at the Classification Event.

C.G. Finney wins Independent qualifier, D. Drummond leads
team
Danny Drummond (C.G. Finney, '13) took medalist honors with a 76 at Wildwood
Country Club, leading his team back to sectionals, this year to compete in Class
A. Joe Drummond (C.G. Finney, '10) finished in a tie for second place with
a 77, matched by Jason Douglas of Aquinas. Joe Colosi and John Carpenter
of Finney rounded out the top five with scores of 80 and 84 respectively.
Claiming the last individual spot was Cam Boon of Bishop Kearney, who shot 94
and registered a hole-in-one on the 194 yard 8th hole, using a 3-iron.
Boon won in a playoff to earn the last spot.
Monday, May 10
Haas wins Allegany qualifier, Cuba-Rushford and Genesee
Valley claim Class C spots
Corey Haas (Cuba-Rushford) captured his second consecutive Allegany
County championship, finishing with a round of 76 at Wellsville Country Club.
Haas and his team will compete in Class C at the sectional tournament.
Drew Chadduck (Fillmore) claimed one of the individual spots, finishing in
second place with a round of 87. Alex Wilson (Canaseraga) placed third
with a round of 88 to qualify for sectionals. Will Simons (Cuba-Rushford)
finished in 4th place at 90, Corey Glass (Genesee Valley) finished in 5th place with 91,
and Phil Chambers (Bolivar-Richberg) claimed the last individual spot with a
round of 92.
Thursday, May 6
O'Donnell captures Monroe County Satellite Tournament
honors, leads 14 to T of C
Brian O'Donnell (Greece Athena) fired an even-par round of 72 at Mill
Creek Golf Club to win medalist honors at the Monroe County Satellite
Tournament, finishing five shots ahead of Tyler VanLandingham (Penfield).
There was a four-way tie for third as Tyler Fallon (Brockport), Jeremy Bartula
(Gates-Chili), Connor Shanahan (Pittsford Sutherland), and Jake Kogler
(Penfield) at had rounds of 79. Chris Sacheli (Victor) finished alone in
7th after his round of 80. In a three-way tie for 8th at 81 was Giancarlo
DiMascio (Greece Athena), Kyle Zaffuto (Brockport), and Brandon Cox (Greece
Olympia). Tied for 11th place at 82 were Michael Walton (Brockport) and
Connor Talty (Fairport). Shane Gleason (Webster Schroeder) and Jeff Beaver
(Victor) completed the qualifier by winning a five-for-two playoff on the first
hole after rounds of 84. These players will compete at the Monroe County
Tournament of Champions at The Brookwoods on May 20.

Maloney and Kline co-medal in Finger Lakes Qualifier, three teams qualify for 2010 Classification Event
Maloney, a First Team West
All-Star and the leader of the 2009 West Division Champion Honeoye Bulldogs,
notched 14 pars en route to a four over par 76 on a very cold day for golf.
Temperatures were stuck in the
40’s all day long.
Kline, the Finger Lakes East
Player of the Year and a First Team East All-Star, collected eleven pars and two
birdies to record his four over par 76.
Both Kline and Pezzulo qualified for the league
championship tournament with a league best plus three differential.
This year, three teams and
twelve players earned spots in the 2010 sectional golf tournament prior to the
2009 Finger Lakes Golf League Championship/Sectional Qualifier by virtue of
their performances during the regular season.
The Geneva Panthers won the Finger
Lakes East Division title and their top four qualifiers for the Finger Lakes
Golf League Championship (Nick DiDuro, Matt Johnson, Zach Logue, Kyle McCormack)
were assured of a spot in sectionals.
The same was true for Honeoye, who
won the Finger Lakes West Division title, placing their top four league
championship qualifiers (Jered Maloney, Justin Evanicki, Ben Cratsley, Kyle
Boldt) in sectionals as well.
The third team to earn a spot in
the 2010 sectional golf tournament was the Mynderse Blue Devils, who defeated
Midlakes in a playoff for the third team spot and invitations to 2010 sectionals
for their top four league championship qualifiers (TJ Pezzulo, Andrew LeBrun,
Vin Pedulla, Mike Lischak).
Seven additional sectional
spots were available during the Finger Lakes Golf League Championship and Kline
earned one of them with his co-medalist round of 76.

McQuaid’s Bozzelli repeats at NYSPHSAA Boys Golf Championship in playoff, Section V defends Sectional Championship
Under ideal conditions, the second round was played Monday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University in Ithaca. Dominic Bozzelli (McQuaid Jesuit HS-V) became only the third repeat champion in tournament history, finishing with a two-day total of four-under-par 140 after today’s round of three-under-par 69. Bozzelli joins Dan DeLetka (1973-74) and Tom Scherrer (1988-89) as the only competitors who have defended their title. Finishing in second place was Yarik Merkulov (Penfield HS-V), who finished with a total of one-over-par 145. Merkulov had the lowest round of the day with a round of five-under-par 67. In all, there were six under-par rounds on the day. Finishing in a tie for third place were Mike Miller (Brewster HS-I), Andrew Lane (McQuaid Jesuit HS-V), and Ryan Simpson (Shenendahowa HS-II) at 146. Bozzelli, Merkulov, and Miller all finished with the same standing in last year’s event.
Section V won the Sectional Championship for the second year in a row and third overall with a two-day total of 1033, which includes the best seven-out-of-nine scores from both rounds, including today’s round of 508, which was a total score of four-over-par for the seven counting scores. They finished 22 shots ahead of second place Section I and 73 shots ahead of third place Section IV.

Penfield takes Class A title, C.G. Finney wins Class B
At the Country Club of Mendon, two new champions
were crowned at the 2009 Section V Team Championship presented by
PriceWaterhouse Coopers.
Penfield won the Class A Championship with a
best 4 out of 5 player score of 299. The Patroits were led by
co-medalist Yarik Merkulov, who finished the day with a one-under-par round of 70.
Penfield edged 2008 Class A champion McQuaid Jesuit, who
finished with a team score of 301. McQuaid was led by
2008 individual state champion Dominic Bozzelli, who
co-medaled at 70 with Merkulov.
C.G. Finney won the Class B Championship in
their first appearance at the event with a team score of 312. Finney
was led by Joe Drummond, the medalist in the Class B portion of the event
with his round of 75. Teammates and 2009 state participants Joe Colosi
and Danny Drummond each shot 76 to give Finney the low three players in
Class B. Mynderse, the 2008 Class B champion, finished in a tie for
second with

Friday, May 15
Kircher wins RCAC title, 2008 State Champion Bozzelli
advances, McQuaid to defend team title
Ben Kircher (McQuaid Jesuit, '10) won the Rochester City Athletic Conference
(formally the City-Catholic League) title by posting a one-under-par round of 70
at Shadow Lake Golf and Racquet Club. Kircher finished two shots ahead of
teammate Dominic Bozzelli (McQuaid Jesuit, '09), the 2008 NYSPHSAA champion, who
finished alone in second place after his round of 72. Finalizing the field
for Brook-Lea were Teddy Corcoran (McQuaid Jesuit, '12), who won a three-way,
matching cards playoff for two spots after finishing with a round of 73.
2008 state participant Andrew Lane claimed the last spot and will attempt to
make the trip to Ithaca for the second year in a row.
McQuaid Jesuit, by virtue of winning the RCAC
title, will defend their Section V Class A championship from a year ago at the
Country Club of Mendon on May 27.
Thursday, May 14
Hall defends Monroe County title, wins outright dispute
fractured finger
Gavin Hall (Pittsford Mendon, '13) medaled for the second consecutive year at
the Monroe County Tournament of Champions held at The Brookwoods Country Club,
finishing 1st after a round of three-under-par 69. This came six days
after fracturing his right ring finger in physical education class and having
little contact with golf during the layoff. Hall will look to make
back-to-back trips to Ithaca on Monday. Teammate Greg Ginder (Pittsford
Mendon, '09) finished the day in a tie for 3rd place after a round of 77 and
will make his first appearance at the tournament.
Yarik Merkulov (Penfield, '10) will join him at Brook-Lea in his quest for a fourth consecutive state team appearance. Merkulov started the windy and rainy day very slow but finished with a back-nine 32 to finish two shots back after a 71. David Cellura (Penfield, '09) looks to join Merkulov at states for the third year in a row. Cellura finished in a tie for 5th place after carding a 78. Two other Patriot teammates, 2008 state participant Brian McKenna (Penfield, '09) and Ian Anderson (Penfield, '09) also qualified for the Individual Championship following rounds of 81 and 82 respectively.
Tied with Ginder in 3rd place was Bryce Edmister (Webster Schroeder, '10), a transfer from Corning HS and a member of the Section IV 2007 and 2008 state teams. Edmister's score of 77 qualifies him for the first time in the Section V event leading to states. Edmister's teammate Shane Dobesh (Webster Schroeder, '10) finished in the 5th place tie with Cellura at 78. Alex Tanea (Webster Thomas, '11) gives the Webster schools three competitors after finishing in a tie for 8th place after a round of 81.
The rest of the field from Monroe County includes teammates Eric Swanson (Rush-Henrietta, '09) and Kevin Connell (Rush-Henrietta, '11), who shot 80 and 82 to finish in 7th and a tie for 11th respectively. Ian Cummings (Greece Athena, '12) finishing in the tie for 8th at 81. Connell makes his second appearance in the Individual Championship while Swanson and Cummings will make their first appearance.
Wednesday, May 13
Pachuta wins Livingston County qualifier by two shots over
defending champ Linehan
Lucas Pachuta (Perry) will be making his third appearance at the Individual
Championship after a round of two-over-par 74 and besting defending Livingston
County champion Tommy Linehan (Dansville) by two strokes. Linehan will be
making his fourth appearance at Brook-Lea this week for the Mustangs. Dan
Bayer (Livonia) placed 3rd after his round of 77. Brad Denton (Honeoye
Falls-Lima) and Alex Fitzpatrick (Hornell) finished in a tie for 4th place after
carding rounds of 78. This will be Fitzpatrick's second trip to the
Individual Championship after playing last year at Stafford. Matt Adonnino
(Geneseo)and Cameron McLaughlin (Letchworth) finished in a 6th place tie at 79,
and both players will be making their second consecutive appearance.
Bryan Weegar (Geneseo) joins Adonnino from the Division 3 champions at next week's tournament, finishing in a tie for 8th place following a round of 80. The last two spots were gained by teammates Taylor Parsons and Brenden Heil (Bath). Parsons also shot 80 to finished tied for 8th with Weegar and Heil won a two-for-one playoff after a score of 81.
Tuesday, May 12
Colosi and D. Drummond lead C.G. Finney to Independents
title, share medalist honors
Joe Colosi (C.G. Finney, '10) and Danny Drummond (C.G. Finney, '13) each fired
two-over-par rounds of 74 at Caledonia Country Club to win the Independents
qualifier and lead their team to the Team Championship for the first time.
Colosi will attempt to make the state team for the second time at Brook-Lea,
having traveled to Ithaca in 2007. Teammate Joe Drummond (C.G. Finney,
'11) took the last qualifying spot, finishing 3rd after a round of 76.
This will be the Drummond brothers first appearance at the Individual
Championship.
C.G. Finney won the team portion of the competition, defeating Aquinas and Wellsville for the right to play at the Country Club of Mendon. They will compete in Class B.
Monday, May 11
Haas gains Allegany County title, returns to Individual
Championship for third year
Corey Haas (Cuba-Rushford, '12) won the Allegany County qualifier with of 78 at
Wellsville Country Club. This will be the third year in a row at the
Individual Championship for Haas, having qualified as a 7th and 8th grader the
prior two years. He was followed by Drew Chaddock (Fillmore, '11), with a
round of 85. Josh Tyler (Cuba-Rushford, '09) placed 3rd after a round of
87 and Lucas Pruch (Bolivar-Richburg, '09) returns for his second trip to the
Individual Championship, taking the final spot with a score of 88.
Barnard wins Genesee Region
title, Attica and Oakfield-Alabama advance to Team Championship
Nate Barnard (Wheatland-Chili) carded an 80 at Stafford Country
Club to win the Genesee Region qualifier, defeating Curtis Farrington (Attica)
and Sam Lamont (Elba) by two shots. Barnard and Farrington will be making
their second consecutive appearance at the Individual Championship while Lamont
will be making his first appearance. They were followed by Keagan Luther
(Kendall), who finished alone in 4th place after a round of 84. The last
two spots were taken by Tyler Tamblin (Oakfield-Alabama) and Chad Winkelman
(Attica), after both players shot 86 to tie for 5th place.
Attica won the team portion of the competition and Oakfield-Alabama also qualified to compete at the Team Championship. Both teams will compete in Class B.
Preston captures Steuben
County qualifier, Hammondsport wins team qualifier
Mike Preston (Hammondsport, '09) shot a 91 at Indian Hills State Park to win the
Steuben County qualifier by three shots over Brad Pruden (Campbell-Savona, '09).
Both players will be returning to the Individual Championship after last year's
appearances. Joining them at Brook-Lea will be first-time participants
Brandon Allen (Hammondsport), who shot a round of 95, and Eric Seaman
(Canisteo-Greenwood), who claimed that last spot after a round of 96.
Hammondsport won the team portion of the event and will represent Steuben County in Class B for the first time at the Team Championship.
Howell wins Wayne County
qualifier, five others advance to Individual Championship
Scott Howell (North Rose-Wolcott, '10) won the Wayne County Qualifier at The
Brookwoods Country Club, finishing with a four-shot victory after a round of 85
and returning to the Individual Championship for the third year in a row.
He was followed by a pair Gananda players entering the tournament for the first
time. Thomas Mills and Mike Dobbins shot 89 and 90, respectively, to join
the field going to Brook-Lea. Also qualifying were first-timers Spencer
Johnson (Sodus), who finished in 4th place with a score of 91, Stevie Thomson
(Williamson) who shot 94 to finish 5th, and Kate DeMay (North Rose-Wolcott) who
claimed the last spot from Wayne County with a 95.
Livingston County division
champions announced
Hornell (Division 1), Dansville (Division 2), and Geneseo (Division 3) have won
their divisions in the Livingston County Athletic Association and have advanced
to the team championship to play in Class B at the Country Club of Mendon on
Wednesday, May 27.
Geneseo will be playing in their third consecutive Team Championship, Hornell is competing for the second year in a row, and Dansville is returning to the event for the first time since 2006.
Qualifier Week begins with
Penfield and Pittsford Mendon golfers leading the way
2008 state participant Brian McKenna (Penfield, '09) took medalist honors at the
Monroe County League Satellite Tournament held at Greystone Golf Course on May
7, finishing with a two-under-par 70. He was among four Penfield players
who advanced to the MCL Tournament of Champions on May 14 at The Brookwoods
Country Club. Teammate and two-time state participant Cody Robertson
(Penfield, '09) finished tied for 2nd after a round of 77, Ian Anderson
(Penfield, '09) came in 4th place with a 78, and Pat Uhazie (Penfield, '09)
finished in a tie for 8th place after a score of 80.
Joe Cassano (Pittsford Mendon, '11) led three Vikings to the T of C, finishing in the 2nd place tie with Robertson at 77. Josh Kaplan (Pittsford Mendon, '09) finished in a three-way tie for 5th with a round of 79 and Greg Ginder (Pittsford Mendon, '09) grabbed the last of the 14 qualifying spots, finishing in a five-way tie for 12th place and advancing in the five-for-three playoff.
Webster Thomas will send two golfers to the T of C as Alex Tanea (Webster Thomas, '11) finished in the tie for 5th at 79 and Kevin Long (Webster Thomas, '10) finished alone in 11th place after a round of 81. Other qualifiers include Ari August (Brighton, '10), who was the third player in the three-way tie for 5th at 79. Alex Palermo (Greece Athena, '11) and Eric Swanson (Rush-Henrietta, '09) joined Uhazie with rounds of 80. The last qualifiers via the five-way playoff were Ben Gibson (Gates-Chili, '13) and Shane Dobesh (Webster Schroeder, '10) following their rounds of 82.
Churchville-Chili becomes
first MCL team to qualify for Team Championship
2008 Monroe County West Division 2 champion Churchville-Chili successfully
defended their title from a year ago and will compete at the 2009 Section V Team
Championship at the Country Club of Mendon on Wednesday, May 27.

Geneva, Mynderse, and Naples
all secure spots for the 2009 Team Championship
The Finger Lakes League has announced their division champions for the 2008
season. Geneva (East Division) will participate in Class A Team
Championship for the second year in a row at the Country Club of Mendon in May
and defending Class B champions Mynderse Academy (Central Division), along with
first-time participant Naples (West Division), will compete in the Class B
tournament. Naples defeated last year's Class B runner-up Honeoye in a
playoff for the right to go to the tournament.

Maloney and LeBrun co-medal
at Finger Lakes Qualifier, 10 others qualify for Individual Championship
Jered Maloney of Honeoye and Andrew LeBrun of Mynderse both had rounds of
one-over-par 73 to finish as co-medalists of the 2008 Finger Lakes Individual
Qualifier at Old Hickory Golf Course in Livonia. Maloney will be making
his second consecutive trip to the Individual Championship and LeBrun will be
making his first appearance.
Two of LeBrun's Mynderse teammates, T.J. Pezzulo and Josh Durso, also qualified with rounds of 77 and 78 respectively, giving the defending Class B team champions three qualifiers, the most of any Finger Lakes school. Pezzulo and Durso are both making their second appearance in the Individual Championship.
A pair of Geneva and Canandaigua golfers made it through the qualifying stage. Matt DeJohn (Geneva) will return to the championship for a second time after finishing in a tie for 3rd place with a round of 74. Teammate Matt Johnson finished in a three-way tie for 10th place, reaching the championship for the first time on the cut line after a round of 79. Canandaigua teammates Tanner Scharr and Matt McCarthy finished in a three-way tie for 6th place with Pezzulo at 77. Both will be first-time participants at Brook-Lea.
Rounding out the qualifiers and first-time qualifiers for the Individual Championship were Jeff Kline of Waterloo, who finished in the tie for 3rd place with DeJohn at 74, Alex Covert of Romulus after a round of 75 to finish alone in 5th place, and Bobby James (Penn Yan) and Ryan Miller (Wayne), who both finished in the 10th place tie with Johnson at 79.
All of these players have advanced to play at Brook-Lea Country Club on Monday, May 18, 2009 in the Individual Championships. Tee times and instructions will be available as the tournament nears this spring.

Bozzelli wins NYSPHSAA Boys Golf Championship in playoff, Section V wins
Sectional Championship
Under ideal conditions, the second round was played Monday at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Course at Cornell University in Ithaca. Junior Dominic Bozzelli (McQuaid Jesuit HS-V) won the individual title in a two-man playoff, defeating sectional teammate sophomore Yarik Merkulov (Penfield HS-V) on the first playoff hole after both players finished with a two-day total of two-under-par 142. Merkulov had the second lowest round of the day with a round of even-par 72 along with Kevin Roy (Bishop Ludden HS-III). Sophomore Mike Miller (Brewster HS-I) placed third at one-over-par 145 after shooting the low round of the day on Monday with a two-under-par 70. Junior Brandon Meltzer (Half Hollows Hills East HS-XI) and senior Mike Furci (Sayville HS-XI) rounded out the top five after finishing in a tie for fourth place with a total of 146.
Section V won the Sectional Championship for the first time in 31 years with a two-day total of 1052, which includes the best seven-out-of-nine scores from both rounds. They finished 14 shots ahead of second place Section XI and 34 shots ahead of third place Section I.

Spiotta wins Individual Championship, veterans return to
state tournament
On a day more fit for skiing than golf, 62 competitors teed off on May 19 to
play for the nine spots on the 2008 Section V Golf state team. Finishing
as this year's Section V Golf Individual Champion is Mike Spiotta (Batavia, '08)
after his round of even-par 72. He began the day with two-under-par 34 on
the front nine, good for a one-shot lead at the turn and held on for a one-shot
victory over Andrew Lane (McQuaid Jesuit, '10). In a third-place tie it
was a pair of 2007 state participants as Lane's teammate Dominic Bozzelli (McQuaid
Jesuit, '09) and Dave Cellura (Penfield, '09) both had rounds of 74
Bozzelli is returning to Cornell for a second appearance while Cellura is making
his third. Alone
in fifth place was John Gerber (Oakfield-Alabama, '08), as the four-year
standout from the Genesee Region fired a 76.
More veterans ended in the four-way tie for sixth place after shooting rounds of 78, which was the cut for this year's tournament. Returning to the state tournament for a third time is defending Section V Champion Yarik Merkulov (Penfield, '10), who will be recognized for his third appearance at this year's state tournament competitors meeting. Fellow Patriot Cody Robertson (Penfield, '09) also returns to Cornell for his second visit and is joined by teammate and state newcomer Brian McKenna (Penfield, '09), thus giving Penfield four competitors in this year's state tournament. Rounding out the top nine is Gavin Hall (Pittsford Mendon, '13), who ensures that Section V will have the youngest competitor in the field as the seventh-grader also qualified at the cut line score, playing his last nine holes at even par. Congratulations to these nine players on their accomplishments today under brutal weather conditions.
There was a playoff today for the alternate position as three players shot 79 to tie for 10th place. Stephen Seeler (McQuaid Jesuit, '08) won the playoff in dramatic fashion over Tyler Phillips (Williamson, '08) and 2007 state participant Joe Colosi (C.G. Finney, '10) as he holed his 115-yard second shot on the first playoff hole for an eagle 2.
The best shot of the day was made by Ben Finn (Gananda, '08) as he recorded a hole-in-one on the 175-yard, par-3 12th Hole at Stafford. Congratulations to Finn as he recorded the first hole-in-one in Section V Golf competition in recent memory.

qualifying week, field set for Individual Championship; Wellsville claims
Independents team spot
Thursday's competitions to qualify for the Individual Championship ended with
sophomores or seventh-graders winning league titles outright or sharing titles
with sectional veterans.
In the Monroe County qualifier, Chris Malek (Webster Thomas, '08) became only
the second senior this week to win or co-medal at their county qualifier at The
Brookwoods Country Club in Ontario after posting an even-par round of 72 on
Thursday. Malek will be playing in his third sectional event. He was
equaled by Gavin Hall (Pittsford Mendon, '13), who as a seventh-grader will be
the youngest player in the field of 62 on Monday. Chris Clapper
(Spencerport, '08) finished alone in third place after a round of 74.
Defending Section V Individual champion Yarik Merkulov (Penfield, '10) shot 75
to qualify for his third appearance, along with teammate David Cellura
(Penfield, '09), who posted a 79 for a sixth-place finish. Mike Spiotta
(Batavia, '08) rounded out the top six with his round of 76, good for a

At Shadow Lake Golf and Racquet Club, Andrew Lane (McQuaid Jesuit, '10) fired an even-par round of 71 at Shadow Lake on May 14 to win the City-Catholic qualifier. 2007 state participant Dominic Bozzelli (McQuaid Jesuit, '09) returns to sectional action for the fourth time, finishing four shots behind Lane in second place. Stephen Seeler (McQuaid Jesuit, '08) finished in third place with a round of 76. A playoff needed to take place for the fourth and final spot. Ben Kircher (McQuaid Jesuit, '10) claimed the final spot after he and teammate Christian Cassara (McQuaid Jesuit, '08) both had rounds of 78.
Finally, at Wellsville Country Club, 2007 state participant Joe Colosi (C.G. Finney, '10) fired the second-lowest round of qualifying, finishing with a two-under-par round of 69 on Thursday. Colosi will be joined by a pair of Wellsville teammates as Will Rigas (Wellsville, '09) and Matt Trimble (Wellsville, '09) had rounds of 73 and 79, respectively. The low rounds by Rigas and Trimble also got Wellsville into the team championship as they defeated two-time Independents champion Aquinas by three shots in the team event. Wellsville will compete in the team championship for the first time and will play in Class B.
Yates leads Greece Athena to
Team Championship berth
Needing a win in their last match against Brockport, 2007 state participant Brady Yates (Greece
Athena, '08) got them off the start they needed with a round of 34, finishing as
the medalist in the 10-2 victory. The win moves Greece Athena into the Team
Championship after finishing just ahead of Gates-Chili in the Monroe County West
Division 1 standings. This is the team's second consecutive appearance in
the tournament and will compete in Class A.
Haas brothers
co-medal at Allegany qualifier, McKay also advances
Brandon Haas (Cuba-Rushford, '09) and Corey Haas (Cuba-Rushford, '12) were
co-medalists at the Allegany County qualifier on May 12 at Bolivar Country Club,
both having rounds of 83. Riley McKay (Bolivar-Richburg, '08) was the

Makowiec tops
Steuben qualifier, Addison wins team event to advance
Colton Makowiec (Addison, '08) won the Steuben County qualifier on May 12 at
Indian Hills State Park, finishing six shots ahead of teammate Marshall Hargrave
with a round of 80. Makowiec will be returning for his third sectional
competition while Hargrave will be making his second appearance. For more

Veteran Phillips
wins Wayne qualifier, Williamson and Gananda advance in team competition
Tyler Phillips (Williamson, '08) medaled at the Wayne County qualifier on May
12, finishing the day with the low round of all qualifiers competed this day
after a round of 69 at Blue Heron Hills. Phillips was seven shots ahead of
runner-up Ben Finn (Gananda, '08) and both will be returning to the sectional

Williamson (Wayne Division 1) and Gananda (Wayne Division 2) were announced as division champions and both will play in Class B at the Team Championship.

Tommy Linehan (Dansville, '10) won the Livingston County qualifier on May 12 at
Caledonia Country Club after a round of 74, finishing with a two-shot victory
over Andrew Philp (Caledonia-Mumford, '08) and Mike Madigan (Honeoye Falls-Lima,

Fairport dethrones
Pittsford Sutherland in playoff, advances to Team Championship; Penfield wins
Monroe County East 2
Fairport defeated the two-time defending Class A Champion Pittsford Sutherland
in a playoff for the Monroe County East Division 1 title at the Country Club of
Rochester on May 12, finishing the 9-hole match five shots ahead of their
rivals, 203-208. #6 Jeff Slabe completed the match for Fairport with a
round of 40, turning a two-shot deficit into the five-shot victory. Fairport
moves on to play at the Team Championship and will play in Class A.
Penfield swept through Monroe County East Division 2 and will compete in Class A
as well at the Team Championship. Penfield is led by last year's state
participants Yarik Merkulov, David Cellura, and Cody Robertson, who along with
Brian McKenna and Tyler Repka, have 9-hole averages under 40 this season.

Genesee Region qualifier, Attica wins team event to advance
Taylor Page was the medalist at Monday's Genesee Region qualifier at Stafford
Country Club, finishing
with a score of 73 and four shots ahead of Wheatland-Chili's Nate Barnard.
Curtis Farrington (Attica) finished in third place after round of 80.
Oakfield-Alabama teammates Chris Bucceri and Jon Gerber qualified after rounds
of 81 and 83, respectively. Kyle Bennett rounded out the Genesee Region
qualifiers, tying Gerber with his round of 83. Led by Farrington, Attica
claimed the team title, finishing seven shots ahead of Kendall and ten shots

The first team to officially qualify for the Team Championship from the spring
season is Cuba-Rushford, defending their league title from a year ago.
They advance to play at the Country Club of Mendon on May 28 and will play in

Monroe County Satellite Tournament, 11 others advance to T of C
Cody Robertson (Penfield, '09) won the Monroe County Satellite Tournament at
Greystone Golf Course with a round of two-over par 74, finishing three strokes
ahead of teammate Brian McKenna (Penfield, '09) and Eric Swanson
(Rush-Henrietta, '10). Swanson's teammate Nick Bucci (Rush-Henrietta, '10)
qualified after a round of 80. James Sargent (Penfield, '10) gave the
Patriots five Tournament of Champions participants as he became the third member
of the team to qualify after winning a four-way playoff for the final two spots
along with Kevin Harbour (Pittsford Mendon, '09), after both players shot 81.
Pittsford Mendon will also be sending five participants to the T of C as Josh
Kaplan (Pittsford Mendon, '09) had a round of 78 and Joe Cassano (Pittsford
Mendon, '11) finished with a 79. Blake Schirtz (Greece Athena,
'10) finished in a tie for 4th place with Kaplan after his round of 78 and

playoff, advances to team championship
Led by medalist Jimmy Wood, Mynderse won the Finger Lakes Central Division
playoff over Waterloo at Clifton Springs Country Club. Mynderse finished
11 shots ahead of their opponents with a team score of 213. Mynderse is
the final of three qualifiers from the Finger Lakes League for the Section V Team Championship in May and
will compete in Class B.
Geneva wins Finger Lakes
East Division title, qualifies for team championship
Led by Finger Lakes 1st Team All-Stars Matt DeJohn and Tommy Bucklin and 2nd
Team All-Stars Steve Dougherty, Alex Love and Krista Baroody, Geneva has won the 2007 Finger Lakes
East Division title and will compete at the 2008 Section V Team Championship to
be held at the Country Club of Mendon on May 28. Geneva will compete in
Class A at this year's event.
Penn Yan's Church claims
Finger Lakes Championship, 11 others qualify for Individual Sectionals
Greg Church (Penn Yan, '08) won the Finger Lakes Golf Championship held at
Silver Creek Golf Course in Waterloo on Tuesday, October 9, firing a
three-under-par 68 to win the event by six shots. Sectional veterans
Curtis Evanicki (Honeoye, '08) and Howie Fleischman (Naples, '08) also qualified
for the event as Evanicki finished in a tie for second place after a round of 74
and Fleischman won a five-man playoff for the last spot after a round of 79.
Church, who is also the Finger Lakes Player of the Year, will lead a group of twelve players from eight different Finger Lakes
schools to the 2008 Individual Sectionals to be held at Stafford Country Club on

Led by Finger Lakes 1st Team All-Stars Curtis Evanicki and Jered Maloney and 2nd
Team All-Stars Tom Conradt and Ray Thomas, Honeoye has won the 2007 Finger Lakes
West Division title and will compete at the 2008 Section V Team Championship to
be held at the Country Club of Mendon on May 28. Honeoye will compete in
Class B at this year's event.

Section V finishes fifth at State Tournament, Merkulov
finishes in 8th place
The second day of the NYSPHSAA golf tournament saw a
two-time champion crowded, but it wasn't Pittsford Sutherland's Andrew Kay
defending his title. John Duthie (Lansing HS-IV, '07) won the event for
the second time after his 2005 victory during his sophomore year. He won a
two-man playoff against Section I's Matt Jaye, who carded the lowest score of
the tournament with a 6-under-par 66 just to get into the playoff after starting
the day five shots behind Duthie.
Yarik Merkulov (Penfield, '10) led the Section V team with a 8th place finish, firing a two-day total of two-over-par 144. Andrew Kay finished in a tie for 13th place with a total of 150 and Alex Weir (Wheatland-Chili, '07) ended in a tie for 19th at 152. All three golfers were named to the all-state team.
Rounding out Section V results, David Cellura (Penfield, '09) finished in a tie for 33rd at 156 in his second year at the tournament. 1st timers Dominic Bozzelli (McQuaid Jesuit, '09) and Brady Yates (Greece Athena, '08) finished in a tie for 38th at 157. Yates had one of the low rounds on Monday with a 74, one shot behind Merkulov for the team low on the day. Fellow rookie Joe Colosi (Rush-Henrietta, '10) finished in a tie for 43rd at 158. Cody Robertson (Penfield, '09) finished in a tie for 85th at 174. Tom Vacca (McQuaid Jesuit, '08) had to withdraw from the event on Monday after 13 holes after re-aggravating a prior left shoulder injury.
Alex Weir was given the Section V Sportsmanship Award at Sunday's competitors meeting. Thanks to all of the coaches who helped out during the event, Time Warner for providing our team shirts, and the State Golf Committee for putting on another successful tournament.

Pittsford Sutherland, Wheatland-Chili win Team Championship
titles
At Lakeside Country Club in Penn Yan, the 2007 Section V Golf Team Championships
crowned two champions as Pittsford Sutherland won the Class A event, finishing
eight shots ahead of second place Penfield, and Wheatland-Chili won the Class B
title, defeating Gananda by 25 shots. Both teams had the medalists of the
day as Andrew Schwert (Pittsford Sutherland, '07) and Dan Colosi
(Wheatland-Chili, '07) both fired rounds of even-par 72. Each team also
had the second place finishers as Andrew Kay (Pittsford Sutherland, '07) had a
round of 73 while Alex Weir (Wheatland-Chili, '07) finished with a 75. For

Penfield wins Monroe County Team Championship
In a preview of next week's Class A Team Championship,
Penfield continued its solid play to win the Monroe County Team Championship on
Wednesday, May 23 at Webster Golf Club's East Course. Yarik Merkulov once
again led the way with a round of two-under par 70. Penfield won the event
by 12 shots over defending champion Pittsford Sutherland. Andrew Kay
(Pittsford Sutherland, '07) and David Cellura (Penfield, '09) each shot rounds
of 75.

Championship berth
A day after three teammates qualified for the state tournament, Penfield
continued its run with a 384-396 victory over Rush-Henrietta at Island Oaks on
Tuesday, May 22. Yarik Merkulov earned medalist honors with a round of 73.
Penfield earned the final spot in the Team Championship representing Monroe
County East Division 2.

Merkulov Wins 2007 Section V Golf Individual Championship
Yarik Merkulov (Penfield, '10) won the 2007 Section V Golf Individual
Championship today at Clifton Springs CC with a round of one-under par 70,
winning the event by two shots over defending NYSPHSAA champion Andrew Kay
(Pittsford Sutherland, '07) and Dominic Bozzelli (McQuaid Jesuit, '09).
Merkulov's teammates David Cellura (Penfield, '09) and Cody Robertson
(Penfield, '09) also advanced to this year's state tournament. Cellura
finished tied for fourth with a round of 73 along with Alex Weir
(Wheatland-Chili, '07). Robertson won a two-way playoff for the last spot
over Dan Colosi (Wheatland-Chili, '07) after they both shot rounds of 77. To
round out the state team from Section V, there was a three-way tie for sixth
place as Joe Colosi (Rush-Henrietta, '10), Brady Yates (Greece Athena, '08),
and Tom Vacca (McQuaid Jesuit, '08), who all had rounds of 75.

Michael Harrower of Batavia captured the Monroe County

The final day of Individual Championship qualifying has
arrived and the City-Catholic and Monroe County Leagues will determine the final
17 spots available for Monday's tournament. Four spots will be contested
for at Shadow Lake Golf and Racquet Club in the City-Catholic qualifier and 13
spots will be played for at The Brookwoods Country Club (formerly Ontario CC) in
the Monroe County qualifier. Tee times for Monday's tournament will be
posted immediately following the completion of play this evening.
Miller leads Aquinas to Independent Title
Aaron Miller shot a 78 at Greystone Golf Club to win
medalist honors at the Independent Schools qualifier on May 16. Teammate
Tony Mangiola placed second as Aquinas claimed the team title and will move on
to the Team Championship to play for the Class A title. Matt Trimble
(Wellsville) was the third independent qualifier.
Practice rounds available for players qualified for
Individual Championship
Clifton Springs Country Club will be open to Section V
golfers who have qualified for the Individual Championship on Monday. Tee
times are available on Friday, May 18 between 2:30-3:30 PM and on Saturday, May
19 between 1:00-2:00 PM. There will be no practice round on Sunday as
previously announced. Cost for the practice round will be $25 at the
expense of the player. Please be sure to call ahead to arrange a tee time

Honeoye Falls-Lima, LeRoy, and Geneseo to represent
Livingston County
The Livingston County Athletic Association has announced
that Honeoye Falls-Lima (Division I), LeRoy (Division II), and Geneseo (Division

Class A title and LeRoy and Geneseo will compete in Class B.

McQuaid wins Thomas Schaeffer Invitational at Greystone
Led by co-medalist Kurt Voss, McQuaid won the Thomas Schaeffer Invitaitonal at
Greystone Golf Course by seven shots over Pittsford Sutherland and repeated as
champion in the fourth year of the event. The eight-team field included
Xavier from New York City and Portville from Section VI. Andrew Kay and
Voss both shot rounds of 3-over-par 75 to earn medalist honors.

Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Brook-Lea holds a rich tradition of Rochester-area

ANDREW KAY SIGNS NATIONAL LETTER OF
INTENT WITH UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND
Andrew Kay of Pittsford Sutherland High School, defending NYSPHSAA Boys Golf champion, signed his National Letter of Intent with
the University of Maryland. Kay became the first golfer from Section V on
record (kept since 1973) to claim the NYSPHSAA title. His score of
4-under-par 140 at Cornell University's Robert Trent Jones Golf Course is one of
the lowest in history at the event and will look to repeat this June.

SECTION V GOLF APPROVES EXPANSION OF
TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP FIELD
The Section V Golf Committee voted unanimously to expand the
field for the Section V Golf Team Championship, pending Section V Executive
Council approval.

FINGER LAKES LEAGUE SECTIONAL QUALIFIER
Congratulations to Sam Venuti of Geneva, who shot a 74 at Winged Pheasant on
October 19 to earn medalist honors. He leads a group of 12 golfers to the
Section V Individual Championship at Clifton Springs Country Club this spring.

MORE HOLES-IN-ONE IN THE FINGER LAKES
LEAGUE
Freshmen Zach Sullivan (Waterloo) and Ryan Morehouse (Penn Yan) each recorded
holes-in-one during league play this September. Sullivan used a 5-iron
from 157 yards on the 3rd hole at Silver Creek on September 20 against Geneva.
Sullivan's ace was the second hole-in-one on record for Waterloo, the last
coming from Mike Woodard on the 17th hole at Silver Creek in 1998.
Morehouse recorded his ace on the 4th hole at Clifton Springs on September 25,
using a utility wood from 180 yards. Congratulations to both!

Congratulations to Vincent Pompeo of
Naples for recording a hole-in-one on September 15 during a match against
Honeoye at Reservoir Creek Golf Course's second hole. Vincent used a
pitching wedge on the 120-yard par 3 and was witnessed by teammate Howie
Fleischman and Honeoye's Curtis Evanicki and Tom Conradt.

Section V would like to recognize the
accomplishments of Andrew Kay and Andrew DiBitetto (Greece Athena '04) for
qualifying for the 2006 U.S. Amateur at Hazeltine National in Chaska, MN.
DiBitetto also qualified for match play and made it to the second round.

Pittsford Sutherland) for winning the 2006 NYSPHSAA Boys Golf Championship.
